I am Cameron and I am your politics co-editor!

Why are you involved in politics?

For me, becoming so politically active was not really my own choice. I had to do so just to survive in a world that hates me and others like me. I am a fat disabled lesbian and a first-generation American. I come from a poor family. I come from a family who came here illegally. I saw other oppressed communities facing similar problems to my own, and I began to educate myself on issues and solutions. It has not been an easy road, but I do not regret one moment of it. I hope to make the world a better place by giving oppressed people equity and reparations.

What will you be writing about?

I will be writing about national politics, as well as local issues! I will be mostly speaking on issues facing oppressed individuals and communities. I will also write about activists and interview local folks about their daily struggles in the South Bay and America. A lot of what I say will be focused on the LGBT community- the problems within and outside- as it is the biggest part of my life, but it will not be my only lens.

What do you want to get out of this?

I am hoping to make change by informing people of what goes on right in their backyard. So many people face challenges here in the South Bay and LA County, but are hardly recognized. I want to let people who are always ignored have a space to speak. I am hoping to create a dialogue and make a change with how people are treated here.

Who inspires you?

James Baldwin, Tarana Burke, Marsha P. Johnson, Stormé DeLarverie, Glenn Burke, Audre Lorde, Bayard Rustin, Lena Waithe, The Lesbian Avengers, ACT UP, and so many more.

What are some fun facts about you?

My biggest passions in life are activism, makeup, and music.

I love showing up at local protests and giving speeches. I go to every one I can, and speak when asked to so I do not take up too much space. I hope to be a politician some day so it is one of my favorite things to do.

I love beating the hell out of my face and doing dramatic looks on totally normal days. My favorite singers are Harry Styles, Hozier, Ariana Grande, Marvin Gaye, Kehlani, King Princess, and Hayley Kiyoko.

Let me know if you want your voice heard! Please feel free to send submissions for politics, news, and opinion pieces. I love hearing from folks and knowing what y’all want from this.

See you soon!
